The most searchable words of 2022
20th December 2022
Every year Google looks back at the most popular searches and create a Year in Search report.
This year word “wordle” came up on top of all searches.
For those of you who don’t know, wordle is a web-based word game. It was created and developed by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle who initially created this game for him and his partner to play. The game was made public in October 2021 and quickly started gaining popularity. In December 2021 Wardle added the ability for players to copy their daily results as emoji squares which accelerated the game’s growth even further.
Following its enormous success, the tool was purchased by The New York Times Company in January 2022 and moved to their website a month after, when the highest number of searches were recorded.
The rules of the game are relatively simple. Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with feedback given for each guess in the form of coloured tiles indicating when letters match or occupy the correct position.
Wordle has a single daily solution, with all players attempting to guess the same word – a different word every day.
